Car Accident Checklist Florida: What to Do at the Scene

Posted By Darrigo & Diaz

If you were in a car accident right now, would you know what to do? Most people don’t think about it until it happens—and in those stressful moments, panic can take over. Accidents are loud, confusing, and emotional. But the decisions you make in the minutes right after a crash can make a big difference in your health, your insurance claim, and even your ability to recover compensation later.

That’s why it helps to prepare ahead of time. Having a simple accident checklist tucked into your glove compartment ensures you don’t forget important steps, no matter how shaken you feel.

Why Preparation Matters

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of injury in Florida. Even when the collision seems minor, adrenaline can mask pain, details can be forgotten, and important evidence can be lost. Insurance companies often use this confusion to their advantage—downplaying injuries or shifting blame.

A checklist doesn’t just give you peace of mind; it helps protect your rights.

The First Priority: Safety

Your immediate concern after any crash is safety. Before anything else, check yourself and your passengers for injuries. Call 911 if anyone is hurt. Even if you think you’re fine, it’s a good idea to get checked out—Florida law only gives you 14 days to seek medical care if you want to qualify for PIP (Personal Injury Protection) benefits.

If the vehicles can move, pull over to a safe spot and switch on your hazard lights. If not, stay buckled in and wait for help. Getting out on a busy roadway can be more dangerous than staying inside.

Police Reports and Why They Matter

Many drivers are tempted to skip calling the police, especially for a “fender bender.” But this is one of the most important steps you can take. A police report documents the accident officially, creates a record of what happened, and provides crucial evidence if there’s ever a dispute. Without it, your insurance claim—or a future legal case—may be much harder to prove.

Gathering the Right Information

In the middle of all the chaos, it can be easy to overlook key details. That’s where your checklist comes in handy. At a minimum, make sure you:

       •  Exchange names, phone numbers, driver’s license details, and insurance information.

       •  Record the other vehicle’s make, model, and license plate.

       •  Collect contact information for witnesses—neutral accounts can strengthen your claim.

And don’t forget your smartphone is one of the best tools you have. Take pictures and videos of everything: the vehicles, damage, skid marks, road conditions, and even traffic signs nearby. These details may tell the story of what happened long after the crash is cleared.

What Not to Do

Just as important as what you should do is what you should avoid. At the scene:

       •  Don’t admit fault, even casually. A simple “sorry” can be twisted against you later.

       •  Don’t agree to “settle it privately” without insurance—this can backfire if injuries show up later.

       •  Don’t post about the accident on social media. Insurance companies check.

Insurance Isn’t Always on Your Side

After you’ve left the scene, you’ll need to notify your insurance company. But here’s the catch: insurance adjusters are trained to minimize payouts. They may push you to give a recorded statement, accept a quick settlement, or downplay your injuries. That’s why many people call a lawyer before they deal with the insurer—just to make sure their rights are fully protected.

Why a Glove Compartment Checklist Works

When you’re shaken up, memory gets fuzzy. Having a printed checklist means you don’t have to rely on remembering every detail in the heat of the moment. It keeps you calm, gives you structure, and helps you avoid mistakes that could cost you later.

Think of it as a small piece of preparation that pays off in a big way if an accident happens.
