9 Safety Tips About School Buses and Kids’ Safety

The moments before getting on the bus and right after they get off are precisely when they need to pay the most attention. If your child uses the school bus, here are nine useful tips you should talk to them about. Unfortunately, an average of 24 school-age children die in school transportation-related crashes each year. The greatest risk involved is not riding the school bus, but getting on and off the bus.

1. Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes ahead of schedule.
2. At the bus stop, show your child where to wait for the bus: at least six feet away from the curb.
3. Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the door opens, and the driver says that it’s okay to approach the bus door.
4. Use the handrails to avoid falling.
5. Never walk behind the school bus.
6. If your child must cross the street in front of the bus, tell him to walk on a sidewalk or along the side of the street.
7. When crossing, place at least five giant steps (10 feet) in front of the bus.
8. Tell your child to make eye contact with the driver before crossing to make sure the driver notices him.
9. If your child drops something near the bus or while crossing tell him to let the driver know right away instead of trying to pick up the object.
