Largest Vehicle Recall in History Continues to Grow

Posted By Darrigo & Diaz

Defective airbag systems

Last year, we saw the largest vehicle recall in history involving defective airbags installed by Tataka Co., but the issue is far from over. At least five more airbag-related recalls were announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) since the new year started.

Approximately 34 million vehicles are potentially affected in the United States, and another 7 million have been recalled worldwide. The recall involves defective airbag systems that can potentially propel metal fragments into the face and body of occupants in the event of a crash.

When the recall was first announced in 2013, only six automakers were involved. Today, more than a dozen make that list. Honda is at the top of that list with more than 8 million of their cars recalled, followed by Toyota with almost 3 million and Nissan with more than a million defective vehicles.

Additional Airbag Recalls Announced in 2016

AUDI and Volkswagen 2015: Seat-Mounted Air Bag Inflators May Rupture

CHRYSLER / 2008-2009, DODGE / 2008-2009, VOLKSWAGEN / 2009: Air Bag Control Unit Power Supply Corrosion

MAZDA / 2004-2006: Driver Side Air Bag Frontal Inflator May Rupture

HONDA / 2008-2010: Air Bag Control Unit Power Supply Corrosion. If the air bag control unit fails, the air bags may not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury.

ACURA / 2005-2016, HONDA / 2007-2015: Driver’s Frontal Air Bag Inflator May Rupture. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver’s frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
