Seatbelts, Transmissions and Fire Risks

Another 2.4 million vehicles are being recalled by GM. The recall includes 2009-2014 model crossovers Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook due to the seatbelt separating from the car during impact. The issue is so severe that dealers have been ordered to halt sells on affected models until all appropriate repairs have been performed.

Transmission problems in 1.1 million Chevy Malibus and Pontiac G6′s form part of the recall as well, models from 2004 through 2008 have a shift cable that might wear out over time, preventing the transmission from correctly switching gears. Eighteen car accidents so far have been associated with the faulty transmission. Smaller recalls also announced yesterday include 1,400 2015 Cadillac Escalades with airbag issues and 58 2015 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra due to fire risks.

Total charges for this quarter’s recalls sum up to $400, not accounting for compensation for those affected. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fined GM $35 million for delaying to report problems with the ignition switch which caused at least 13 deaths, GM was aware of the issue as early as 2004. Over the last five months GM has recalled close to 14 million cars in the United States alone, totaling over 15 million worldwide.
